This is a public area in Edgware, surrounded by suburban housing and roads with urban traffic. The objective was to renovate the right side as a Holocaust Memorial Garden, featuring seating and a circular rose garden.
PUBLIC PLANTING
This planting plan is for a public space requiring low maintenance. All of the selected plants are widely available and are either evergreen or have distinctive shapes in winter.
I have used Cotinus coggygria and Salix alba 'Vitellina' architectural planting and surrounded these by shrubs of similar colour. For winter colour, I have chosen grasses with tall stems such as Calamagrostis, and Anemanthele for vibrant colour. For winter colour, I also selected Cornus sanguinea 'Midwinter Fire', which has tall stems with vibrant colour, to match the colour of Anemanthele.
I have interspaced the grasses with Pittosporum 'Tom Thumb', for contrasting colour.
SHADY GARDEN DESIGN
This was a rear garden in a bookshop. It was shady and dry and the client wanted somewhere to sit and read books. It was also important to consider views into the garden from the bookshop itself.
